Description: relax and focus with 10 hours of authentic Roman bathhouse ambience, recorded from an upstairs apartment supra ipsum balneum in Rome, first century AD. Whether you are studying or writing, these sounds will help you reach true inner calm. Remember: real quiet is not the absence of noise. It is a state of mind.

Best experienced with headphones. Not recommended for sleep.

TIMESTAMPS

0:00:00: Ambience begins. Distant splashing.
0:14:30: Weightlifters manus plumbo graves iactant (swinging hands heavy with lead/weights). Grunts and groans.
0:31:00: Weightlifters, continued. Listen closely: at least one of them is not lifting anything and is only laborantem imitantur (imitating the sound of working out). Wheezing.
1:02:15: Massage. Slapping on shoulders. Sound changes depend on if masseur’s hand lands plana aut concava (flat or cupped). Try to tell the difference. Many listeners find this meditative.
1:47:00: A ball player arrives and begins counting his points out loud. Actum est (yo it’s over).
2:20:40: Brawler.
2:21:05: Thief, caught.
2:58:00: A man who loves the way his voice sounds in the bath.
3:36:10: Several cannonballs into the pool with enormous splashes.
4:12:00: The alipilus (hair-plucker). Thin, shrill voice, pitched deliberately so he gets noticed.
4:12:00–9:59:59: The hair-plucker, continued. He is only quiet while plucking someone’s armpits, at which point customer screams instead.
5:05:00: Drinks seller.
5:06:00: Sausage seller.
5:07:00: Pastry seller. Each one sells his goods with his own signature melody.
6:30:00: Carriages racing past outside.
7:15:00: A carpenter (lives in the building).
8:44:00: A saw-sharpener (lives next door).
9:59:59: Silence.

I’d like to clarify that my voice is raised for professional reasons. It’s how my clients find me. Also, book now, no RSVP necessary, I am always available.

@man.who.likes.his.voice
Can someone tell me the timestamp for my part. I would like to listen to it again.

@marcus.studies.latin: 2:58:00
@the.man.who.likes.his.voice: Thank you. Beautiful.
